‘No-one Sleeps Tonight’, track 1 of 4 of Glaswegian rockers Wired Desire’s debut EP, and if you start playing this, no-one will get a good night’s kip. The metal beast of the 80s has been awoken from its slumber in the form of this young Scottish band that both looks and sounds the part. In fact if you close your eyes you would almost think that was Bruce Dickinson or Jon Bon Jovi screeching their way through this retro montage.
There is no denying that Wired Desire and in particular singer Kieran Daly are fully equipped and intent on rocking the foundations of the music scene, it’s whether there’s any room for them that I question. The opening aforementioned insomniac anthem is fast-paced, energetic and relevant- with a welcome, but maybe not intentional Rod Stewart quote:
“So what becomes of you my love?”
But it is there that this collection loses its flow. ’The Hard Stuff’ is laden with classic metal riffs and guitar solos but just fails to capture the listener as much as what came before.
Third track ‘Damn Hard’ tends to follow the same framework but with more profanity and slight backing vocals, which is an improvement, but there’s just not much variation to maintain interest. The EP ends with ‘Ride’ which is probably the only other track worth a listen for the average music fan- filled with pace changes, strong solos and of course attitude-ridden vocals from Daly.
If you are a fan of classic rock and metal you will enjoy this more than most, for the rest of us- maybe just an early night with the latest Coldplay record. 2/5 CM
