It’s late, it’s dark, it’s sweaty but you just have a feeling something exciting is about to happen. And so it did- dubbed South Africa’s biggest export, on this form Britain may want to lay out a red carpet fit for the likes of Kylie for them
Young, exciting and seriously cool, The Parlotones swaggered onstage in front of a jam-packed intimate Barfly crowd and played their hearts out. Dressed like Green Day and sounding like a mix of The Killers progressive style, riffs as catchy as the Kaisers with a dash of the melodic ear of Muse, The Parlotones galvanized this appreciative crowd into a fracas. The band showcased tracks off new album ‘Radiocontrolled Robot’ including ‘Louder than Bombs’, ‘Beautiful’, ‘Dragonflies and Astronauts’ and ‘Over-exposed’ and had the crowd captivated throughout.
Borrowing stage tricks from the likes of Queen (‘We Will Rock You’ style riff) and Muse (megaphone), The Parlotones were here with the objective to excite and thrill with their blend of harmonious pop-punk. Attendees ranged from the very old, to middle-aged to the very young (the predominant group of course), but such diversity shows the potential of the appeal of such a band who will have both dad and daughter’s toes tapping to their accessible style.
A fast-paced 10-12 song set was dramatically ended with the infectious ‘Here Comes the Man’ which had the whole floor vibrating. And it was a crowd who were sorry to see them go, but for the promise of a rendezvous at the bar. If they keep this up, it won’t just be underground music venues their music will be reverberating from.
