Mercury Rev, 'Snowflake Midnight'
 Mercury Rev, ‘Butterfly’s Wings’

Musical journeymen and one-time NME saviours, Mercury Rev release a new one from their digitally-free album, Snowflake Midnight- but would you pay for it?

Drawing on the Rev’s signature dreamy sound, ‘Butterfly’s Wings’ almost sounds like Chris Carter’s mainstream musical debut with a beat so close to the line of the X-Files theme, the lawyers will be on red alert.
Released: 29th September 2008
Label: V2
Single from the 7th studio album, ‘Snowflake Midnight’

Sci-fi afflictions aside, the song features a strong and catchy vocal- although how you beat like a butterfly ’s wings is still somewhat an enigma. There’s also an intriguing child’s laughter soundbyte which again isn’t dissimilar to a mainstream Cow&Gate advert, but let’s give the Rev the benefit of a creative doubt.

It is quite listenable indeed especially for fans of new-wave and modern electronic- and let ’s face it, how many million people downloaded the X-Files ringtone?

It’s enjoyable and somewhat of a grower of  a track after repeated play. The remixes that come bundled with the single don’t do the track a great deal of justice though and are best avoided in truth.

The original track however is memorable, fairly hummable and features a memorable piano-led piece. But most importantly, this is a welcome return from a pioneering band who are doing their all to appeal to a whole new generation of new-wavers. 9/10 CM
