Album of the Year: Bloc Party, ‘Intimacy’, The Killers, ‘Day & Age’
Varied, daring and most importantly, a bloody great effort. ‘Intimacy’ pips ‘Day & Age’ due to its variety and for the fact that both bands are at the third album - yet Bloc Party experimented and it paid off.
Single of the Year: Kleerup feat. Robyn, ‘With Every Heartbeat’
Usher feat. Young Jeezy: Love in This Club
Usher may have inspired half of R and B this year, but Kleerup’s engaging electronic beat takes the top prize with Robyn’s soothing vocals making it the comedown track of the year, which was always going to win a 2008 single prize.
Festival of the Year: Glastonbury ‘08, Reading ‘08
As anyone who watched Jay-Z’s closing set and also The Verve’s ending set will know, Glasto had it all this year, which was just as well for the thousands who had to watch the start of it in the rain.
Comeback of the Year: The Verve, New Kids on the Block
‘Forth’ was the album most music fans and especially Verve fans were certain would never happen. But it was well worth the wait and this was well-supported with adrenalin-fuelled shows including three festivals. The Verve are indeed back.
Worst Album of the Year: Coldplay, ‘Viva La Vida or Death and All His Friends’, The Pussycat Dolls, ‘Doll Domination’
Never, ever, ever listen to what the NME tells you, ‘Viva La Vida’ was both Coldplay’s most daring record and most musically dire. Songs that were constructed with egos almost as big as those who wrote them. Gone is the beautiful simplicity of the like of ‘Shiver’ and the hair-raising anthems like ‘Square One’, substituted for meaningless guitar solos in baffling whirlwinds of structureless, rudderless bile.
Essential Tracks of the Year:
Alanis Morrisette, ‘Citizen of the Planet’, Attic Lights, ‘Never Get Sick of the Sea’, Beyoncé, ‘Halo’, Bloc Party, ‘Flux’, Bomb the Bass, ‘Butterfingers’, Britney Spears, ‘Womanizer’, David Holmes, ‘I Heard Wonders’, Dido, ‘It Comes and It Goes’, Dizzee Rascal feat. Calvin Harris & Chrome, ‘Dance Wiv Me’, Duffy, ‘Mercy’, Eric Prydz, ‘Pjanooo’, Estelle feat. Kanye West,
