Felix Fables, Basement ACM

You’ve got to love a band who do their own promotion, so I was eager to catch Felix
Fable’s set after being personally accosted by  lead man, Michael Baker in the street.
After Bridezilla it was going to be a tough act to follow as the band took to the stage, watched by seemingly a fair few more than had come for their predecessors.

Slow, yet pleasing melodic rhythms were what ensued as Baker and Georgia Mason’s girl vocal interchanged nicely over stories of romance, good times and dreamy adventures followed. The very likeable ‘Acorn’ was at the forefront of the performance and worked just as nicely as ‘Whatever the Cost’, which was a tad more Southern in its style.

If that should have given us a taste of this band’s love for old-school rock-and-roll, it should have come as no surprise when the band covered Chuck Berry’s ‘Johnny B. Goode’ in a rapturous encore which went down particularly well with the crowd assembled.

Felix Fables also played their other well-known tune, ‘Windows’ in what was an energetic, yet short set encompassing the best of folk, rock-and-roll and old-fashioned love melodies.

Groove Armada, NME Corn Exchange

It must be hard running a massive music organization like NME, getting to choose all
of the best acts for your stage. In what is of course, a new music festival, there has to be one act to draw them all in and the legendary duo, Groove Armada are about as big in the UK amongst dance music lovers as you will find. Whether they were particularly suitable for the Great Escape was probably worth a debate until you saw their show.

You simply can’t put a price on experience and the twosome roped in an eclectic live singer to do the rounds and often unthinkable job of replacing the likes of Bryan Ferry and Will Young as they showcased numerous tunes from their awesome ‘Black Light’ record.

In an enjoyable set that also included classic tracks like ‘If Everybody Looked the Same’ and ‘At the River’ bunched in with the fantastic tracks off the latest album, including ‘Paper Romance’ and ‘Look Me in the Eye Sister’, it was a stunning way to end the festival and the twosome had us grooving until the early hours of an increasingly cold night in Brighton.
