Where can you find a suited 50 something singing along about how he quite
fancies getting frisky with his girlfriend’s sister? At a GLC gig of course!
Goldie Lookin Chain brought their ‘ASBO 4 Life’ tour to London for a single night and they gave this quirky Camden setting one
to remember. Dingwalls was full to bursting point as the GLC’s London following gathered in this feel-good atmosphere to get a glimpse of
their Welsh heroes. And they did not disappoint, cries of “you fucking knows it” and a GLC chant echoed out as the nine-strong super group somehow squeezed onto
the tiny stage to start with the classic ‘Half Man Half Machine.’
As Rhys orchestrated proceedings, each colourful member was given their time in
the spotlight from Adam Hussein’s ‘Charm School’, Maggot’s ‘The Maggot’ to Graham The Bear (Newport’s best DJ apparently)’s ‘Everybody is a DJ’ – a particularly stomping rendition that went down just as well as the older
tracks.
Songs off the latest record were introduced with audience participation
encouraged, especially on the electronically-based ‘By Any Means Necessary’. The particularly catchy lead single’s chorus, off the new record, was relayed to the audience as apparently the
woman who sings it wouldn’t come on tour with them – one need not wonder why. Adding to this a pre-rehearsed dance routine which as Eggsy tells us, “shits all over N*Sync” just elevated the track beyond anything recorded in a studio.
It’s the little things that outline a good gig from a classic one and seeing the
nine of them illuminated in a Bohemian Rhapsody-esque spotlight singing “Welcome to Gerrrrmanneeee” was a sight one wouldn’t forget soon.
It’s surprising to see people beaming to tracks they won’t know yet, but that’s just the feeling the GLC install in their audience. Still when the Newport
super group did play “the best fucking song ever” - ‘Guns Don’t Kill People, Rappers Do’ the noise level unsurprisingly raised from bustling to deafening as the room
began to vibrate. And when the members who weren’t singing began to show signs of what would be medically described as a nervous
twitch during the scratching parts – it just shows why this gig had been sold out for months.
The Chain ended a triumphant show with past hits, ‘Your Missus is a Nutter’ and ‘Your Mother’s Got a Penis’ as an increasingly sweaty environment recoiled for their swansong. There is a
reason for the GLC’s immense cult-following – live shows that you will be telling all your mates about, not least about the
bloke who lit up a reefer towards the end! 10/10 CM
