The Real Champions’ League
It’s quite rare that the 2nd Round of the Champions’ League throws up a match that is good enough to be the Final, let alone five of
them.
Though it somewhat underlines the farcity of the new format that there are two
contests in the first knock-out stage that pits four different domestic league
winners against eachother. But that’s UEFA for you... let the second, third and fourth in and then base the draw
solely on their performance.
Of course if the whole tournament was in a League format, then maybe we would
have a truer indication of the ‘European Champions’, rather than the one who plays for a 0-0 in the first leg and then nicks a goal
in the second... Still we can’t accuse Liverpool of dodging the big boys this year round!
This year will be a real test for the English clubs, who have been so dominant
in recent years, some might even say UEFA fixed it that way... Still at least
whoever does emerge from these epic battles will have the likes of
Panathinaikos, Villareal, Porto or Atletico Madrid to contend with. And who
said there are no easy games in football?
