Text Box: Text Box: Text Box: Community Farce! Wednesday 13th August 2008 One day someone is going to explain to me a relevant purpose for the Charity/Community/Cock-and-bull Shield. Of course I’ve heard the usual- ‘It’s the first game of the season’ So, why does it have to be?! ‘It’s to determine the Champions as it pits the FA Cup winners against the League winners’ One– the FA Cup is weak and two the Shield has acted as more of a curse than an omen, and anyone dumb enough to think that its winner will conquer all before them needs to go back to whatever it was they were doing. ‘It’s for charity’ God give me strength. Anyone that watched last years’ or indeed this season’s offering will surely agree that it is a stopgap farce of a match and no further time or indeed Setanta Sports’ money should be wasted on it. In all my football-watching life I have never witnessed such a half- arsed Penalty shoot-out as I did when viewing Chelsea Vs Utd last August. The players don’t care, the managers don’t need it (apart from Ferguson so he can add to his treasure trove) and I’ll be damned if any fan worth their salts is bothered. Season 08/09’s Shield encounter rather resembled Bobby Robson’s Carlsberg Pub Team enjoying a kickabout, even Harry can’t get his mites out of bed for this one. Sir Alex left Ronaldo and Rooney out and still there was no danger. Ditch the shield, move it abroad and get your bloody 39th Game, then at least the players might have some stage on which to perform on. The yearly Shield is wasting good people’s time and £15.99s.
