Saturday 9th August 2008 Football must be stuck in one hell of a Dark Age in Britain if we can’t even figure out how to send an Olympic Team to Beijing– it’s just as well, we probably wouldn’t have qualified if Austria and Switzerland was anything to go by. I just can’t help wondering what it would have been like if we had of raised a team in the past. I’m not suggesting we raise one now, I mean apart from Craig Gordon (before you say Aiden McGeady, do well to remember he’s Irish, despite playing for Celtic), who else would make it into the team? Course a few years ago we could have had a team with the likes of Seaman, Colin Hendry, Tony Adams, Paul Gascoigne, John Collins, Alan Shearer, Teddy Sheringham, Ryan Giggs... Erm... Ian Dowie?! But you get the point. And if you don’t, my point is that had we had such a team, I guarantee you Atlanta would have been awash with Union Jacks and maybe a few more legitimate British Gold medals. It’s just such a shame that every other sport can get over such petty Nationalism and football can’t. The current International crisis is that not only can England not qualify, but neither can any of the other Home Nations (though Scotland without doubt enjoyed a phenomenal qualifying campaign). And this is for the European Championships! Let’s of course not forget that the Euro Qualifying offers an automatic qualification for 1st and 2nd as opposed to the World Cup ones where a Playoff lottery decides. Such a simple solution, just staring us in the face.
