Well I hope you have all enjoyed the last couple of days– a period which will truly define the Premier League forevermore.
Let’s try and break this all down, which I will do so in sections to try and make sense of all this.
Manchester City
First and foremost I would like to say how pleased I am for all City fans– as Noel Gallagher says this is payback for all those loyal fans’ years of support to the cause. Hell I remember when they were under the guidance of Kevin Keegan and were bouncing up and down from the top-flight, now they have the Arabic Alan Sugar behind them and an mind-boggling estimated £420billion of wealth.
Whilst Dr. Sulaiman Al Fahim may well be playing fantasy football with reported raids for various world stars– it is nice to have a new face in the mix. Mark Hughes is a good manager and the signing of Robinho could well change many people’s final League positions as well as City’s. Whether they will break the Top 4 remains to be seen but City have started well and who knows who will turn up in January. I like Jo as a player as well and with SWP and the Samba star joining fellow Brazilian Elano, defensive rocks Richard Dunne and Micah Richards and Joe Hart in goal, they could seriously have a go at it. The sale of Vedrun Corluka though was rather ill-advised. We shall certainly see.
Boardroom Politics– The fate of the traditional, passionate British manager.
The funniest Press statement I read today? “We can confirm that we have accepted Alan Curbishley’s resignation as we feel it is in the interests of both parties.” I bet they did... The phrase ’Jump before you're pushed’ immediately springs to mind. The fans didn’t like him and he has indeed won the Sack Race he was so tipped to do so– that being after a edgy moment from Tyneside.
I can’t say I’m Curbishley’s big fan. Yes he did a great job at Charlton, but then the club didn’t go anywhere. Admittedly they did manage to get relegated straight after he left, but that doesn’t prove his talent as a manager. He can’t handle a big club, simple as, and that’s why prosperous fans didn’t like him. Who actually believed Curbs when he said Gianluca Nani was appointed with his blessing?
As for Keegan, I have sympathy. The echoes from the St James’ Park Boardroom seem to illustrate that King Kev should be quiet because he is being paid handsomely– since when is that a reason to not care about your club? Ashley has simply not delivered the signings the passionate Geordies demand and deserve with constant rumors about him trying to offload the club dogging the Sports Direct tycoon. As one fan said this week “The fans would rather he bought some new players, rather than buying us pints.” And Dennis Wise? What exactly does he know about transfers that KK doesn’t?
