T.V. Hits a New Low
February: So far the month that TV forgot
Reports this week suggest that the Government are looking into the possibility of submerging Channel 4 into a public service body to compete with BBC - obviously not soon enough.
On the right you’ll see a full programme listing for 5/2 terrestrial TV and it makes dire reading. With the exception of Piers Morgan’s (the man was made for TV) fantastic docu-series, there’s pretty much f-all on. And that has sadly been a hallmark of February TV so far. Shockingly, it’s Channel 4 that are churning out the worst.
The worst football coverage on Earth
Such a shame it is that Channel 4’s schedule makes the worst attempt, the channel seemingly obsessed with reality TV. And as we all know, obsessions are not good for you. Not content with running ‘body-shock’ specials on the fattest teenager and the cringe-worthy Supersize Vs Superskinny (which is not a word), they’re now flagshipping today’s
Tonight’s TV (5/2/09) OntheBox.com
Key: Score Programme Analysis Top Show
BBC One: EastEnders (decent soap), Life of Riley (crap sitcom), The Green Green Grass (poor spin-off sitcom), Hustle (tired, scam format), News at Ten, Question Time (with Will Young) 3/10
BBC Two: Media Revolution (decent documentary with Janet Street-Porter), MasterChef (tired cooking competition), Victorian Farm (one hour long), What the Victorians Did for Us (enough with the bloody Victorians), NewsNight (at the same time Question Time is on BBC1) 2/10
ITV1: Krypton Factor (as in the re-hashed series), The Bill (tired police docu-soap), Piers Morgan on Monte Carlo (excellent documentary series on the movers and shakers), News at Ten, Dexter (ITV drama... need I say more) 2/10
C4: Channel 4 News, 10 Years Younger: The Challenge (Making two ordinary people feel bad by giving them a makeover and it’s presented by Myleen Klass [yes that bird from Hear’Say who’s classically trained and had a baby]), Cutting Edge (C4’s hard-hitting documentary series, this week: a serial killer), FILM: Sleepy Hollow (how inventive) 0/10
C5: Animal Rescue Squad (re-hash of BBC programme), Cowboy Builders (fairly amusing docu-show), Soho Blues (US import), FILM: Thir13en Ghosts (exceptionally poor horror movie) 1/10
programming with Myleen Klass’s 10 Years Younger. Of course Myleen herself being 27 and playing music, would know so much about looking young.
February was also the month that the world’s worst (and I’ve seen the American ones) football coverage managed to cut to adverts during Dan Gosling’s 118th minute winner during Liverpool Vs Everton last night. I’ll say it once and many times, don’t give ITV the coverage, even if they give you a wheelbarrow full of Euros. Any channel that believes Matt Smith, Robbie Earle and Terry Venables are valid figures need a

good firing squad.
American Idol - so good they put it on ITV2
Yes what would Homer Simpson do if he was English? Probably be about 100lbs lighter from not staring at the box all night. We all know American TV is more creative, better budgeted and frankly more relevant than what we produce - ITV dramas (any of them, but especially those featuring Suranne Jones, Caroline Quentin or Sarah Lancashire) apart of course!
Still ITV have brought us one decent show (no, not Paris Hilton), American Idol. But it’s so good they stick it on ITV2 on Thursday and Friday. But watch it online, after it’s shown, don’t cave in to ITV2’s dictatorial schedule. Which more people need to do as there’s not much unmissable UK telly in this brave new digital age. CM
